Takkeci Ibrahim Ağa Camii, “the only wooden mosque in Istanbul that appears to preserve essentially its original appearance. It is rectangular in form with a wooden roof and porch.” Wood is cheap, but liable to destruction by fire. Other mosques have suffered this fate, this one, being outside the city walls, escaped unscathed. It was founded in 1592 by a maker of felt hats called takke or arakiye, especially the long conical kind worn by the dervishes. The mosque’s tiles are from the greatest period of Iznik (many have been stolen over the years). Unfortunately the light was such I could not take their picture to the extent I wanted. However, this was compensated for by some shots of the woodwork with fine painting, and of the general setting. Then there was a service, I left after I took a picture of the imam calling for prayer (now from within the mosque, using a microphone).
