The front of the mosque.
Locally known as Şıh Camii the mosque was built in 1563. It is part of Gazianteps most important “külliye” (a complex centered around a mosque with often Koran School, Hospital, Soup Kitchen et cetera, that all is gone, some new buildings were erected). In particular the stonework is famous, mostly so that of the mihrab. A central octagonal stone pillar is connected to the walls by a fan vault. Together with the roofing this makes for a distinctive design. The door is embellished with muquarnas. In the south of the mosque there is a “hazira” (tombs contained within the enclosure of a mosque) including that of Sheik Fethullah. Toilets and other waterworks are in a downstairs space that seems to be called a kastel.
